The Sidwell Friends Quakers did it again. For a third straight year, Coach Eric Singletary’s program emerged from a talent-packed D.C. State Athletic Association bracket as state champions. On Sunday night at George Washington, the Sidwell community celebrated under a cloud of red and white streamers after a 47-37 win over St. John’s.
Sidwell was one of several local programs to earn a celebratory weekend. In Virginia, Paul VI continued its dominant campaign by adding a state title. The Panthers stormed their way through the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division I bracket, beating St. Anne’s-Belfield by 10 in Saturday’s championship game. Coach Glenn Farello’s program, fresh off a Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship, may be up for national postseason opportunities in the near future.
For public schools, the Virginia state finals are set for this weekend in Richmond. The Class 6 title game is a scintillating matchup between teams that have spent much of the winter in these rankings: South Lakes and Patriot. The only other local program still playing is Tuscarora. The Huskies, who will face Hampton in the Class 4 final, join the Top 20 this week.
