Dhaka clears goods transport from Chattogram, Pangaon to Kamalapur ICD

Bangladesh’s National Board of Revenue (NBR) yesterday allowed transfer of imported goods containers destined for Dhaka’s Kamalapur inland container depot (ICD) from Chattogram port and the Pangaon inland container terminal until October 31.

The decision was aimed at addressing severe congestion at the Chattogram port, where containers bound for Dhaka have piled up due to recent political unrest, an NBR press release noted.

A total of 1,856 containers stuck at the Chattogram port now can be transferred.

Bangladesh’s National Board of Revenue has allowed transfer of imported goods containers destined for Dhaka’s Kamalapur inland container depot from Chattogram port and the Pangaon inland container terminal until October 31.

But importers must follow four conditions, domestic media reports cited the press release as saying.  NBR did not, however, mention the conditions.

The Chattogram Port Authority has earlier sent a letter to NBR, requesting its instructions on how to handle this situation as it required amendments to Import General Manifest, which contains detailed information about cargo carried on a vessel or an aircraft entering a country.

The country’s apparel manufacturers said late last week that the recent flooding had disrupted the sector’s supply chain by submerging the Dhaka-Chattogram highway. They sought alternative routes for transportation of goods in time of natural calamities.

They urged the government to arrange for exporting containers via the Pangaon port due to the flooding to meet deadlines.
