Seattle-based cybersecurity firm lays off over 100 workers

Cybersecurity giant F5 is laying off more than 100 employees between its offices in Seattle and the Spokane area, the company disclosed in a state regulatory filing Tuesday.

The cuts hit the Seattle-based company’s product teams to “better align resources with important customer needs,” an F5 spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

“As part of these changes, selected roles were eliminated, while other employees were placed into new roles supporting strategic growth areas,” the spokesperson said. “All impacted employees are being provided with assistance to support their transition to new roles internally or their next steps outside F5.”

The company did not say how many of the affected employees were based in Seattle and how many were in Liberty Lake, a city near Spokane.

F5 was founded in 1996 as a tech company that helped overloaded servers at the dawn of the internet age. It’s since transitioned into application and cloud security.

The company has about 1,100 employees based in the Seattle area, according to the Puget Sound Business Journal.

The company reported last year in a regulatory filing that it had over 6,500 employees globally.

F5 went through widespread layoffs in April 2023, during which it let go of 620 employees companywide, about 9% of its workforce.

Tuesday’s layoffs came almost a week after F5 reported financial results for April through June. The company beat analysts’ estimates, reporting $780 million in revenue with $190 million in profit.

F5’s layoffs are the latest in a string of cuts in the tech industry.

Microsoft has laid off more than 15,000 employees since May to streamline its workforce amid rising AI costs. Like F5, Microsoft said layoffs are the result of shifting priorities for the business.

Amazon also laid off hundreds of employees in its cloud division in June. T-Mobile laid off a small portion of its workforce this week.
