Hamas militants infiltrated Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip Saturday and fired thousands of rockets into Israel, military leaders said. At least 40 Israelis have been killed and more than 700 injured. Militants from Palestinian Islamic Jihad say they have taken Israeli soldiers hostage; Israel has not commented on the claims.
