    Stumbling due to superhero fatigue?

THE next film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe might be in for a rough ride at the box office.

Set for a Nov 10 release, female-fronted The Marvels is tracking to open in the US$75 million (RM334 million) to US$80 million (RM382 million) range in the US, according to The Hollywood Reporter (THR).

The film is a sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel, which opened to roughly twice The Marvels’ projection. THR backs the estimates by citing research firms NRG and The Quorum.

The report also mentions “superhero fatigue” due to the saturation of the film market with superhero films as a possible cause of the low estimates. Releasing to a meagre US$55 million (RM262 million) in America, Warner Bros’s The Flash was the last film to be hit by fatigue.

Despite dissenting arguments that there is not really a “fatigue” for these films, the projections may also be taking into account the ongoing actor strike, which prohibits actors from promoting their films.

In the film, Brie Larson will reprise her roles as Carol Danvers from Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau from WandaVision, and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan from Ms Marvel.

The Marvels will be directed by Nia DaCosta, and her involvement is predicted to give the film a boost, as DaCosta is the first black woman to be hired by Marvel Studios on a big tentpole blockbuster.
