    Australian retail turnover rises by 0.6% in October 2024

    Australia’s retail sector experienced a 0.6 per cent increase in turnover during October 2024, as per seasonally adjusted data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). The rise follows a modest 0.1 per cent growth in September and a 0.7 per cent increase in August.

    Australia’s retail turnover rose by 0.6 per cent in October 2024, following growth of 0.1 per cent in September and 0.7 per cent in August.
    Non-food sectors led gains, with other retailing up 1.6 per cent, while declines were seen in clothing, footwear, and personal accessory retailing and department stores.
    Sales grew ahead of Black Friday.

    Performance across industries was mixed. Non-food sectors saw notable gains, with other retailing up by 1.6 per cent. However, declines were observed in clothing, footwear, and personal accessory retailing, which fell by 0.6 per cent, and department stores, which dipped by 0.3 per cent.

    Robert Ewing, ABS head of business statistics, said: “After a steady result last month retailers told us that sales activity grew in October ahead of the Black Friday sales.”
