It quickly transitioned to footage of the U.S. military bombing an Iranian vehicle.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9b7dca\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cWasted\u201d soon appeared on the screen, the same<strong> <\/strong>image that flashes across the game when a player dies.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-97699f\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cL1, R1, SQUARE, R1, LEFT, R2, R1, LEFT, SQUARE, DOWN, L1, L1,\u201d  Steven Cheung, the White House\u2019s communications director,  <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/StevenCheung47\/status\/2030004332247077160\" target=\"_blank\">tweeted<\/a> as he posted the Grand Theft Auto cheat code to unlock unlimited ammunition for the user-controlled player.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-7d7365\" class=\"body-graf\">There were more in recent days: A video titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/WhiteHouse\/status\/2031895801064985021\" target=\"_blank\">STRIKE<\/a>,\u201d featuring clips of bowling and bombings, another <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/WhiteHouse\/status\/2030015671820509202?s=20\" target=\"_blank\">connecting baseball bombs with the real variety<\/a>, and a post <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/WhiteHouse\/status\/2032115039985881556\" target=\"_blank\">juxtaposing military strikes to Nintendo Wii gaming<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-314f3e\" class=\"body-graf\">Those are just a handful of the many videos that the White House has published online in the opening days of the war with Iran, offering a window into the Trump administration\u2019s social media strategy around winning support for what President Donald Trump has described as both \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/trump-decided-strike-iran-rcna261205\" target=\"_blank\">major combat operations<\/a>\u201d and a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/trump-calls-iran-war-short-term-excursion-georgias-special-election-mo-rcna262658\" target=\"_blank\">short-term excursion<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-32bc95\" class=\"body-graf\">So far, the White House has posted roughly a dozen such videos to social media platforms in an effort to hype up its effort and draw attention to its military strikes in Iran, hoping to sell an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/trump-administration\/poll-majority-voters-disapproves-trump-handled-iran-rcna261564\" target=\"_blank\">unpopular conflict<\/a>.<\/p>\n<section id=\"anchor-0629cc\" class=\"embed-widget embedWidget embed-widget--medium\" data-testid=\"embed-widget\"\/>\n<p id=\"anchor-14255b\" class=\"body-graf\">The montages compared real war with a variety of pop culture imagery including violent video games, movies such as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/WhiteHouse\/status\/2029741548791853331\" target=\"_blank\">Tropic Thunder\u201d and \u201cBraveheart<\/a>,\u201d and even the cartoon \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/WhiteHouse\/status\/2029657893155311927\" target=\"_blank\">SpongeBob SquarePants<\/a>.\u201d On Friday afternoon, the White House turned to sports, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/WhiteHouse\/status\/2030015671820509202?s=20\" target=\"_blank\">promoting a video<\/a> showing MLB stars hitting home runs with every crack of the bat being met with footage of explosions from the battlefield, while cutting a second video <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/WhiteHouse\/status\/2030051395294941427\" target=\"_blank\">comparing<\/a> missile strikes to heavy hits on the football field.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-6e6eb4\" class=\"body-graf\">Those clips have come under scrutiny for comparing actual warfare to violence in fictional universes or sports, with critics saying they show a lack of seriousness that the White House is paying to a war in which Iranian civilians and American troops are being killed and maimed. Two former senior U.S. military officials expressed outrage and disgust to NBC News over the postings.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-4f31a7\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cIt\u2019s absolutely disrespectful to everyone involved including the Iranians themselves who are at war and disrespectful to the Americans who risked their lives,\u201d one of the former senior military officials said, adding that whoever is creating the videos \u201cthinks this is all some joke.\u201d<\/p>\n<section id=\"anchor-39085d\" class=\"embed-widget embedWidget embed-widget--medium\" data-testid=\"embed-widget\"\/>\n<p id=\"anchor-f25776\" class=\"body-graf\">Trump has said the war is near its conclusion while simultaneously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/iran\/live-blog\/live-updates-iran-war-israel-strikes-tehran-beirut-trump-leader-rcna262018\" target=\"_blank\">saying he won\u2019t make a deal<\/a> to end it without Iran\u2019s \u201cunconditional surrender\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/white-house\/trump-privately-shown-serious-interest-us-ground-troops-iran-rcna262176\" target=\"_blank\">privately showing interest <\/a>in sending ground troops into the country. The price of oil has seen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/iran\/live-blog\/live-updates-iran-war-oil-ship-attacks-hormuz-trump-israel-lebanon-rcna263101\" target=\"_blank\">dramatic fluctuations amid escalating attacks<\/a> and with Iran effectively shuttering the Strait of Hormuz, a key chokepoint in the global energy supply chain. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-ceeb70\" class=\"body-graf\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/iran\/live-blog\/live-updates-iran-war-israel-us-lebanon-tehran-oil-prices-hormuz-rcna262889\" target=\"_blank\">Hundreds of people have so far been killed<\/a> in Iran and across the Middle East since the U.S. and Israel launched joint strikes on Tehran late last month. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/iran\/live-blog\/live-updates-iran-president-must-respond-attacks-strikes-hit-rcna262269\" target=\"_blank\">Seven American service members<\/a> have been killed and approximately 140 troops have been wounded, with nine suffering serious injuries.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-2e8392\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cIt\u2019s f&#8212;ing bullshit&#8212;,\u201d the former senior military official continued. \u201cNobody thinks this is a good idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f01f95\" class=\"body-graf\">The videos mark the latest chapter in the Trump administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/politics-news\/white-house-social-media-2025-memes-ai-maga-messaging-rcna220152\" target=\"_blank\">revamped approach to social media in the president\u2019s second term<\/a>, shifting its tone to play off of trending memes and link them with the president\u2019s policy objectives. They\u2019ve generated controversy on multiple occasions, including when official administration accounts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/internet\/trump-administration-social-media-posts-extremist-rhetoric-rcna254372\" target=\"_blank\">echoed terminology<\/a> used by far-right extremists.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-8e853a\" class=\"body-graf\">The most recent videos have also drawn pushback from those whose footage was included in the montages.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-cdaf37\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cHey White House, please remove the Tropic Thunder clip,\u201d actor and director Ben Stiller, who was the protagonist in the 2008 film, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/benstiller\/status\/2029989426948870182?s=46&amp;t=-DGlDYI6esU-4We1z9gHiQ\" target=\"_blank\">tweeted<\/a> in response to one of the videos. \u201cWe never gave you permission and have no interest in being a part of your propaganda machine. War is not a movie.\u201d<\/p>\n<section id=\"anchor-d161b6\" class=\"embed-widget embedWidget embed-widget--medium\" data-testid=\"embed-widget\"\/>\n<p id=\"anchor-f4e5e0\" class=\"body-graf\">The White House called the effort a success, pointing to how much attention the videos have brought to the administration\u2019s early wins on the battlefield.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-eaf01e\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThis is another example of our non-traditional and traditional media strategy, which has proven highly successful,\u201d White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. \u201cOver the past few days, the White House videos have generated more than 2 billion impressions. People are talking about the tremendous success of the war and the U.S. Military\u2019s obliteration of Iranian terrorists \u2014 and that\u2019s exactly the point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-cc0c0a\" class=\"body-graf\">The memeified videos are not the only prong of the White House\u2019s social media strategy. The White House has also amplified more traditional government communications. On Wednesday, the White House posted separate clips of <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/WhiteHouse\/status\/2031815784201171103\" target=\"_blank\">Trump<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CENTCOM\/status\/2031700131687379148\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. CENTCOM Commander Adm. Brad Cooper<\/a> speaking on the conflict.
