Air defense systems in southern Ukraine destroyed more than 30 drones in a “massive” Russian attack overnight, a spokeswoman for the Ukrainian military’s southern command said Thursday. Natalia Humeniuk added that air defenses were activated, including in the port of Odessa and nearby Mykolaiv.

Ukraine’s air force said it destroyed dozens of drones overnight. Odessa Governor Oleh Kiper said air defenses repelled the drone attack on his southern region and reported no casualties or major damage. The Mykolaiv governor said a building and power line were damaged by debris from intercepted drones, but that there were no casualties.
Navalny described his prison transfer as the “strictest possible punishment,” on his account on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter. He lost his appeal against a 19-year prison sentence this week. Russia released more video of its Black Sea Fleet commander, Adm. Viktor Sokolov, whom Ukraine claimed to have killed in a strike in the annexed Crimean Penninsula last week. It was not clear when the video published Wednesday, showing Sokolov speaking to reporters, was filmed. Earlier, Ukrainian Special Operations forces said it would clarify information of Sokolov.
Some Wagner Group mercenaries have returned to the battlefield in Ukraine after being in Belarus since a failed mutiny in Russia, Illia Yevlash, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Army’s eastern group of forces, told RBC Ukraine.
Britain’s new defense secretary, Grant Shapps, met with Zelensky on a visit to Kyiv, the Ukrainian president announced Thursday. The two discussed boosting Ukraine’s air defenses during the meeting this week, according to Zelensky’s office.
A U.S. government shutdown could endanger funding for Ukraine, despite $6 billion in aid announced Tuesday as part of a bipartisan Senate plan to fund government operations until mid-November. Washington imposed sanctions aimed at halting the delivery of parts used for Iranian Shahed-136 drones deployed by Russia in Ukraine, the Treasury Department announced. It said five entities and two individuals based in Iran, mainland China, Hong Kong, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates have facilitated shipments and financial transactions involved in the procurement of critical components in the unmanned weapons.
