Two days after keeping Jaren Hall as the third quarterback on their 53-man roster, the Vikings decided to let their former fifth-round draft pick go.
On Thursday morning, the team signed former Broncos and Rams quarterback Brett Rypien and waived Hall. The change to the No. 3 QB spot comes after the Vikings kept Hall on their 53-man roster on Tuesday and the Bears cut Rypien at the end of the preseason. The 27-year-old played in Denver while Vikings running backs coach Curtis Modkins and offensive line coach Chris Kuper were on the staff, and was with the Rams in 2023. He’ll come to Minnesota, in other words, with some familiarity with the team’s scheme and staff.
While Hall could return to the Vikings’ practice squad if he clears waivers on Thursday, the move comes after a strong preseason where he completed 28 of his 46 passes for 339 yards and four touchdowns, finishing 17 of 25 for 189 yards and two scores in a start against the Eagles on Saturday. He sustained a left leg contusion on a hit from Eagles pass rusher Julian Okwara that led Kevin O’Connell to take Hall out of the game earlier than he’d planned, though Hall was standing on the sideline for the rest of the second half.
The Vikings drafted Hall in 2023 with plans to develop him behind Kirk Cousins and Nick Mullens as a rookie, but those plans changed when Cousins tore his right Achilles tendon on Oct. 29, leaving Hall as the team’s only healthy quarterback while Mullens recovered from a back injury. He finished the win at Lambeau Field and directed a scoring drive in his first start the following week against the Falcons, but sustained a concussion while trying to scramble for a touchdown on the drive. When Hall came back to the starting lineup on New Year’s Eve against the Packers, he completed only five of 10 passes for 67 yards and an interception, struggling so much that O’Connell pulled him in favor of Mullens at halftime.
