The tariffs on Mexico and Canada will stay in place till they clamp down on drugs and migrants illegally crossing the border, Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform.

Donald Trump has said that immediately after he assumes charge on January 20, he will sign an executive order imposing a 25-per cent tariff on all goods coming from Mexico and Canada and an additional 10-per cent tariff on China until smuggling of fentanyl is blocked.
He also attacked Beijing for not doing enough on the latter’s promise to award death penalty to those caught dealing with fentanyl.

“Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily solve this long simmering problem,” he was quoted as saying by US media outlets. “It is time for them to pay a very big price!”

During his election campaign, Trump threatened Mexico and China with tariffs of up to 100 per cent, if he deemed those necessary. In 2018, he had cited national security justifications to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union.

Trump has also said he will end China’s most-favoured-nation trading status with the United States.
